SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A psychiatrist who examined the man accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart in Utah said Tuesday Brian Mitchell is not mentally ill.
Dr. Noel Gardner said Tuesday that Mitchell has a personality disorder, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Asked specifically whether Mitchell is severely mentally ill, Gardner said he "does not meet the criteria."
Gardner reported in 2003 that Mitchell has "narcissistic personality disorder."
Mitchell is on trial in federal court in Salt Lake City on charges that he abducted Smart, then 14, from her bedroom in 2002, held her for nine months as a "second wife" and repeatedly raped her. His lawyers say Mitchell is mentally ill.
Leslie Miles, a psychiatric nurse practitioner who was at Utah State Hospital when Mitchell was a patient there, testified Monday that he "seemed to turn it on" when he wanted to convince doctors or other staffers that he had a religious delusion.
"Mr. Mitchell functioned very well. He could get his needs met. He was not psychotic," Miles said. "My own conclusion was he didn't have a mental illness."
