Death row inmate dies in Florida

RAIFORD, Fla., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A man on Florida's death row for 20 years for the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl has died of what officials say appear to be natural causes.

A spokeswoman for the state Corrections Department said the cause of Robert Power's death would be determined by an autopsy, the Orlando Sentinel reported. She said he died just before 4 a.m. Friday at the Union Correctional Institution in Raiford.

Power, 50, was the fifth person this year to die while awaiting execution in Florida. The state has one of the biggest death rows in the country with almost 400 inmates.

He was sentenced to death in 1990 for kidnapping, raping and killing Angeli Bare. He broke into her house in the Orlando area in 1987 after her parents left for work.

Power was also sentenced to eight consecutive life terms for other crimes. Because Power had not yet exhausted his appeals, no death warrant had been issued.
