Somali woman decides to stay in U.S. jail

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- A California woman charged with sending money to the Somali group al-Shabaab has waived her right to seek release on bail from a federal detention center.

Nima Ali Yusuf's lawyer said his client would simply be trading one jail for another if she was freed, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Wednesday. Yusuf, a Somali national living legally in the United States, would go to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center.

Yusuf waived her right to seek bail during a short court hearing Tuesday.

Federal investigators say Yusuf sent $800 to al-Shabaab, a militant group with alleged ties to al-Qaida, and promised to recruit at least one fighter in the United States willing to go to Somalia. She is allegedly linked to a group from Minneapolis believed to have left the city to join al-Shabaab.
