BOSTON, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Following a crackdown on caffeine-alcohol drinks like Four Loko, U.S. health officials say they have a new worry -- alcohol-infused whipped cream.
Cans of Cream, 30-proof whipped cream in flavors like orange, cherry, chocolate and raspberry are showing up in liquor stores in Massachusetts, the Boston Herald reported Sunday.
State liquor regulators said they would be closely monitoring the product for potential abuse by consumers.
"They can get a significant amount of alcohol in one shot," said Dr. Anita Barry, a director at the Boston Public Health Department.
Cans of the frothy stuff are selling well, some retailers said.
"I'm amazed at the amount we've sold. I thought these would be one of those kitschy things we pulled off the shelf in six months, but within the first week we had already sold out the initial order," Wine Emporium general manager Max Pendolari said.
Dr. Michael Siegel, a professor at Boston University's School of Public Health, said there's little doubt Cream will be aimed at young drinkers.
"What we need is a good surveillance system to be able to monitor these things," he said.
Kingfish Spirits of Cleveland, the maker of Cream, said it has complied with all laws and is determined to make sure it is distributed and marketed "responsibly."
