NEW YORK, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A Bronx man was killed and seven people injured in an apartment building fire, the New York Fire Department said Sunday.
The fire broke out around 9:45 p.m. Saturday at 131 E. 169th St., a five-story building that houses a grocery store and a barbershop on the ground floor, The New York Times reported. Assistant Chief Ronald Spadafora called the fire "suspicious."
Neighbor Anthony Barns said he saw firefighters bring out a man's body.
"They dragged him down to the lobby and put a white sheet over him," he said.
Barns also said he watched a woman jump from a fire escape.
Jeff Butler, a contractor who was working across the street, said he saw at least 20 residents descend the fire escapes, and people were shattering windows to escape their apartments.
