Winter storms hit northern U.S.

SEATTLE, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. forecasters say they are predicting snow in the Northwest and heavy rains for the Northeast as winter sustains its march across parts of the country.

A winter storm warning is in effect until Saturday for parts of eastern Washington, with up to a foot of snow expected in the Cascades, The Seattle Times reported.

Chains were required on eastbound Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass Friday as snow continued to fall, mixed with freezing rain and gusty winds.

Western Washington could expect freezing rain throughout Friday, the newspaper said.

In the Northeast, a cold front will move through bringing rain to much of the region, The Weather Channel reported.

As Northern New England braces for rain, some snow is expected through Saturday night near Lake Erie and into Sunday near Lake Ontario, forecasters said.
