Poll: Subdued voter support in earmark ban

WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Americans favor a ban on earmarks, but not as enthusiastically as some congressional members, a Rasmussen Reports survey released Friday indicated.

The national telephone survey indicated 48 percent of likely voters favor prohibiting Congress members from steering public funds to pet projects in their home districts.

However, 36 percent indicated they oppose such a ban and 15 percent said they weren't sure, Rasmussen said.

A scant 10 percent of voters said they think taxpayer money is divvied up fairly among the states, Rasmussen said. Seventy-five percent say some members of Congress ensure their states get more money than other states, while 14 percent indicated they aren't sure which is the case.

Results are based on a national telephone survey of 1,000 likely U.S. voters conducted Nov. 17-18. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
