WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Cindy McCain, wife of U.S. Sen. John McCain, has openly broken with her husband on at least one issue, the policy on gays in the military.

McCain appears briefly with other well-known people in a short public-service video on bullying of young homosexuals, ABC News reports. Her words would be unremarkable coming from a Hollywood celebrity, but they are spoken by the wife of a vocal supporter of the current "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

"Our political and religious leaders tell LGBT youth that they have no future. They can't serve our country openly," she said. "Our government treats the LGBT community like second-class citizens."

Adam Bouska, who produced the video, said Cindy McCain reached out to him.

"After the recent LGBT suicides in the news, she wanted a way to speak out," he said.

McCain, R-Ariz., possibly the best-known veteran in Congress, has fought efforts to repeal the law that allows gays to serve in the military but only if they are not open about their sexuality.
