SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Activists and patients are protesting raids on medical marijuana sites in San Jose, Calif.
Drug agents have raided three local providers in the last few weeks, the San Jose Mercury News reported. Several others have closed, fearing they will be next.
"How can you sit up there and take my rights away?" Aisha Alexander, 36, asked the city council at a hearing Tuesday. She said she uses marijuana to relieve breast cancer symptoms.
"This is not something over which we have any authority or jurisdiction," Mayor Chuck Reed said, since a special Santa Clara County enforcement team is responsible.
Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio, who has launched a study on limited zoning and taxation of medical marijuana providers, asked the city manager to get more information for the council.
While a statewide marijuana legalization referendum failed last week, voters in San Jose and several other cities backed local measures to tax and regulate the drug.
County narcotics agents also have run a sting operation, arresting almost two dozen people accused of "perverting" the California medical marijuana law.
