Deputy charged with drunken driving

VALPARAISO, Ind., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- An Indiana sheriff's deputy faces a drunken driving charge after allegedly hitting two parked cars while leaving his sheriff's election win party, police said.

Cpl. Ryan Fenters, 34, of Hebron, Ind., also faces a charge of leaving the scene of an accident, Valparaiso, Ind., and state police said.

The deputy, suspended with pay, received an award in 2004 for catching drunken drivers.

"Nobody likes to see this," Porter County Sheriff David Lain told the Gary, Ind., Post-Tribune.

Fenters allegedly left his boss's Election Night victory party shortly before crashing into two parked vehicles at 1:36 a.m. Wednesday.

Two witnesses told police they saw a man running from the scene, police said.

Fenters allegedly ran to a bar and called his wife with a borrowed cellphone. A Sheriff's Department coworker later drove him back to the crash scene, police said.

Fenters admitted being in the crash but blamed another driver for pulling out in front of him, a police report said.

He could not describe the other vehicle other than "a blur going by," the report said.

Fenters refused field-sobriety or blood-alcohol tests, so his blood was drawn after a warrant was issued, the newspaper said.
