MILWAUKEE, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin has lost his seat of 18 years, once thought safe, to his Republican challenger businessman Ron Johnson, results show.

Johnson will be the state's first Republican senator since 1992, when Feingold defeated Robert Kasten.

Johnson won with 52 percent of the vote to Feingold's 47 percent with almost 97 percent of the precincts counted, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.

In the race for governor, Milwaukee Country Executive Scott Walker has posted another GOP victory, a 52 percent to 47 percent victory over Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

Of the eight U.S. House seats in contention, GOP candidates have taken five while Democrats have secured three, CBS News said.
