AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Republican Rick Perry has won an unprecedented third four-year term as governor of Texas defeating Democratic opponent Bill White, results show.

Perry, proffering Tea Party rhetoric and seen as benefiting from a Texas economy less vulnerable than other states, bested the former mayor of Houston with a margin of roughly 56 percent to 41 percent, WFAA-TV, Dallas/Fort Worth, reported.

At 10 years in office, Perry already has been governor longer than any other Texan in history.

Oil and gas executive Republican Bill Flores, who had never run for public office before, made history of his own besting 20-year Democratic Rep. Chet Edwards in the state's District 17, WFAA-TV said.

The contest for the largest piece of Texas real estate is the state's 23rd District running from San Antonio to El Paso involving Republican businessman Francisco "Quico" Canseco and Democratic incumbent Rep. Ciro Rodriguez.

The Dallas Morning News reported with 70 percent of the precincts reporting Canseco was taking a slight edge with 49 percent of the votes to 45 percent for Rodriguez.
