Russia, U.S. talking about missile shield

HANOI, Vietnam, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Russia's foreign minister says Moscow and Washington continue to discuss the controversial U.S. missile-defense plan for Eastern Europe.

Sergei Lavrov told reporters at the ASEAN summit in Vietnam Saturday that the talks were being carried out by a working group established by President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

"This work continues both within our cooperation with the United States and within the Russia-NATO Council," Medvedev said.

Lavrov said the negotiators were discussing the missile shield in the context of "missile proliferation," Russia's RIA Novosti news agency said.

Russia is against the missile shield and has not bought the U.S. contention it is needed to guard Europe against a future nuclear threat from Iran.
