Beverly Hills schools hires subway lawyer

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- The Board of Education in Beverly Hills, Calif., says it won't rule out a lawsuit over the plan to dig a new subway line under the city's high school.

The Beverly Hills Unified School District recently retained a lawyer to go over the environmental review of the proposed line that would serve the West Los Angeles area.

"We want to work with the experts and do everything we can," said Lisa Korbatov, the school board's vice president. "But if it comes down to a lawsuit, we won't shy away from it."

The proposed 9 1/2-mile extension would run underneath homes in the upscale city as well as the venerable Beverly Hills High School. It would link the existing Metro line with Westwood and include a stop in Century City that would serve Beverly Hills.

The Los Angeles Times said Saturday the Century City stop was recently moved a block from the Santa Monica Boulevard route that Beverly Hills leaders and homeowners preferred. "They changed it on us. A lot of people in Beverly Hills feel they were duped," said Ken Goldman, president of the South West Beverly Hills Homeowners Association.
