National Guardsman killed in Juarez

EL PASO, Texas, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A weekend National Guardsman from El Paso, Texas, was shot dead in Juarez on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, officials said Thursday.

The National Guard said Jose Gil Hernandez enlisted in November 2007, KVIA-TV in El Paso reported. Officials said he was a student who served with his unit as a fire direction sensor specialist on drill weekends and the annual training period.

The Chihuahua state attorney general's office said Ramirez and another man were found dead on a street corner Wednesday, the El Paso Times reported. A third man had been shot and wounded.

Soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss, which straddles the Texas-New Mexico line near El Paso, are banned from visiting Juarez. But the National Guard said the rule applies only to those on active duty, KVIA reported.

A Juarez TV station, XHIJ, said Ramirez has a brother serving in the military in Iraq and another at a base in Laredo, Texas.
