Boy, 3, found abandoned in car for a day

PASADENA, Calif., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A drunk father forgot about strapping his 3-year-old boy into a car seat, where the boy was found a day later, Pasadena, Calif., police said.

Dylan Kurihara was found by a passerby at 10:40 Sunday night, Police Chief Phillip Sanchez told KTLA-TV in Los Angeles.

Dehydrated but otherwise in good shape, the boy was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital for evaluation and later placed in protective custody, police said.

The parking lot where Dylan turned up is two blocks from where police arrested his father, Joe Kurihara, 23, the night before for public intoxication and resisting arrest, the Los Angeles Times reported.

At the time, officers did not know he had his child nearby, nor did Kurihara mention it. He later said he was so drunk that he had no memory of his child being with him.

Policemen and volunteers had been frantically combing Pasadena for the boy.

Witnesses, including Dylan's mother, last saw him with Kurihara at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. The parents had been attending a wedding.

Kurihara has two other recent misdemeanor arrests, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He is being held at the Pasadena city jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
