Barracuda bites kayaker in Florida Keys

MARATHON, Fla., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A barracuda jumped into a kayak and bit a woman in the Florida Keys, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday.

The woman and a man told the Coast Guard they were kayaking near Big Pine Key Sunday afternoon when the fish leaped into the vessel, bit her in the chest and then jumped back into the water, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

The victim sustained an apparent punctured lung and broken ribs, the Coast Guard said. Her friend could not paddle to shore without causing her further harm.

A rescue vessel from the Coast Guard station in Marathon and a small craft from TowBoatU.S. with a paramedic reached them in the shallow water.

The woman was taken to Dolphin Marina and airlifted to Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition, the Coast Guard said.
