Lesbian couple gets apology

RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- The president of the oldest shopping center in Raleigh, N.C., says he has apologized to a lesbian couple who were ejected from the mall by a security guard.

George York, president of York Properties, Inc., which manages Cameron Village, said a Saturday meeting with the women was "brief and amicable," WRAL-TV, Raleigh, N.C., reported.

Caitlin Breedlove said she and her girlfriend were asked to leave the establishment Wednesday after the guard saw them embracing, and one kiss the other on the cheek.

Breedlove, co-director of the social-justice group Southerners on New Ground, said she asked the guard if he would have asked them to leave if they were a heterosexual couple and she said the guard replied "no."

"We welcomed the opportunity to sit down with the women and offer our sincere regrets over last week's incident," York said.

Breedlove was also happy about the way things turned out.

"We really appreciate Cameron Village acknowledging what happened and taking responsibility for it," Breedlove said.
