Gates: NATO must take on cybersecurity

BRUSSELS, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- NATO must improve its ability to deal with threats to computer systems, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday at a meeting in Brussels.

Gates, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other ministers from NATO members and NATO officials met to discuss a draft proposal for NATO strategy, the American Forces Press Service said. The meeting is in preparation for a summit in Lisbon in December.

"Our vulnerabilities are well-known, but our existing programs to remedy these weaknesses are inadequate," Gates said, discussing cybersecurity. "The new draft highlights this underappreciated new threat, though the language could be sharpened further."

Gates said another emerging threat discussed by the draft is ballistic missiles.

The secretary said it is most important that agreements come out of the Lisbon summit that will ensure NATO has the forces it needs to accomplish the goals laid out in the strategy agreement.
