Aid worker killed in rescue attempt

KABUL, Afghanistan, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A Scottish aid worker held captive in Afghanistan was killed in an attempt to rescue her, officials said.

Linda Norgrove, 36, was killed by her captors Friday during a rescue attempt by U.S. forces, the BBC said Saturday.

She was taken hostage with three other aid workers on Sept. 26; her colleagues were released unharmed last week, the report said.

"From the moment they took her, her life was under grave threat," said British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

"Working with our allies we received information about where Linda was being held, and we decided that, given the danger she was facing, her best chance of safe release was to act on that information," Hague said. "Responsibility for this tragic outcome rests squarely with the hostage takers."

Norgrove worked for the U.S. aid group DAI, and the area in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province where she was held is virtually ruled by militants, tribal elders and powerful clans, the BBC reported.
