2 Knott's Berry coaster trains collide

BUENA PARK, Calif., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Ten riders were hurt Thursday evening in a collision on a roller coaster at Knott's Berry Farm in Southern California, emergency officials said.

The crash was the first on the Pony Express ride, a park spokeswoman said.

The Orange County Fire Authority described the injuries as minor, the Los Angeles Times reported. The injured, ages 12 to 60, were treated at local hospitals.

Jennifer Blazey, a spokeswoman for the park, said the Pony Express ride was closed down. But she said the rest of the park, which was holding a Halloween Haunt, would stay open until 1 a.m. as usual.

The crash on the Pony Express occurred at about 8 p.m. PDT when one train, which had just left the boarding point, was unable to negotiate a hill, Blazey said. It rolled backwards, hitting a train that was standing at the station.

The ride opened in 2008. Blazey said the cause of the collision was being investigated.
