Prosecutors mull bias in Clementi case

NEWARK, N.J., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The lawyer for New Jersey student Dharun Ravi says he is confident his client will not be charged with a bias crime in the death of gay roommate Tyler Clementi.

Ravi's attorney, Steven D. Altman, said he was "heartened to hear" prosecutors investigating the case were "taking their time to learn all the facts" about the incident before adding a bias element to invasion of privacy charges already filed against Ravi, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Wednesday.

"I can only hope that the public will do the same," Altman said. "I am confident that nothing will be learned to justify, warrant or support the filing of any bias criminal complaint."

Clementi, 18, a freshman at Rutgers University killed himself Sept. 22 by jumping off the George Washington Bridge -- a day after Ravi allegedly tweeted he and another student had used a Web cam to watch Clementi "making out" with a man, the Star-Ledger said.

Lawyers for the other student arrested Sept. 27, Molly Wei, said: "This is a tragic situation. But this tragedy has also unfairly led to rampant speculation and misinformation. Molly committed no crime."
