LUCASVILLE, Ohio, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A man who beat his girlfriend and dumped her body in a river became the eighth prisoner executed in Ohio this year Tuesday.

Michael Benge, 49, of Hamilton, was executed by injection at 10:34 a.m. EDT at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

His last words, as relatives his victim looked on: "I can never apologize enough. ... I hope my death gives you closure. That's all I can ask. Praise God and thanks."

Benge beat his girlfriend, Judith Gabbard, 38, with a tire iron and weighed her body down with concrete and dumped it in the Miami River on Jan. 31, 1993.

His last chance ran out Monday when Gov. Ted Strickland agreed with the parole board's unanimous recommendation against sparing his life. He had exhausted his appeals all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Benge's family said he became violent after beginning to smoke crack cocaine. He stole Gabbard's jewelry and other possessions to support his habit.
