2 teens badly injured by lightning

ST. GEORGE, Utah, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Two Utah high school students were "showing signs of life" Tuesday night after being struck by lightning during a violent thunderstorm, a school official said.

Christopher Dane Zdunich and Alex Lambson, both 17, were sheltering under a tree when they were struck. They were airlifted to a hospital in Las Vegas from Dixie Regional Medical Center, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

"They are still showing signs of life and hope," Marshall Topham, an assistant superintendent of schools in Washington County. "Their families are just asking for the faith and prayers of everyone on their behalf in this grim situation."

Sgt. Craig Harding of the St. George Police said the school day had just ended at Snow Canyon High School when rain began "falling in buckets." Zdunich and Lambson were found lying on the ground after the lightning strike, and school officials pulled them into the band room and did CPR.

Other students were standing a few yards away and witnessed the boys being hit, Topham said.
