DETROIT, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Veteran Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., says his driver's license was suspended because of a bounced $139 check for the renewal.

Conyers issued a written statement confirming a media report his license was suspended for about a month this summer while the mess was sorted out.

A spokesman for the 81-year-old Conyers told the Detroit Free Press Conyers driving record is clean.

According to Conyers, the renewal check was accidentally written on a bank account that had been closed.

Conyers is up for re-election in November.
