BRANDYWINE HUNDRED, Del., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Christine O'Donnell, the Tea Party favorite now a Republican Senate nominee in Delaware, denied Friday she paid personal expenses from campaign funds.
O'Donnell has, for the most part, stayed away from the news media since she upset U.S. Rep. Mike Castle in the Republican primary last month. But she answered a few questions at the opening of her campaign headquarters in Brandywine Hundred.
Asked by a reporter for KYW-TV, Philadelphia, about records that show she lived in a townhouse where her campaign paid the $15,000 rent, O'Donnell said several campaign workers live there too and the building functions as an office. O'Donnell has reimbursed the campaign $1,500 so far.
She said a night out at a bowling alley was a gesture of appreciation to her staff. She referred other questions to her lawyer.
O'Donnell said she has been busy meeting Delaware voters at everything from events in private homes to a youth football game in Wilmington, The News Journal of Wilmington said. She said inviting the press turns events into a "media circus."
While O'Donnell as a conservative activist was known for a hard line on social issues, she has said the Delaware race is about taxes and smaller government.
