DENVER, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Backers of a state amendment to declare a fetus a "person" from the start of "biological development" say a Colorado legislative guide gives false information.
Personhood Colorado filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Colorado Legislative Council, the Denver Post reported. Keith Mason, president of the group, said the information on the amendment in the 2010 State Ballot Information Booklet "parrots the talking points" of those who oppose Amendment 62.
The booklet, commonly known as the Blue Book, says the amendment would "apply the term 'person,' as used in the Colorado bill of rights concerning inalienable rights, equality of justice and due process of law, to every human being from the beginning of the biological development of that human being." It cites arguments for and against the amendment, listing, as an argument in its favor, that it might be used to restrict abortion in Colorado.
As an argument against the amendment, the booklet says it might be used to restrict access to medical care for miscarriages or in cases where pregnant women are diagnosed with cancer, which supporters say is untrue. The booklet also says the phrase "from the beginning of the biological development of the human being" is not defined in the amendment and has no legal definition.
