Alleged al-Qaida backers face new charges

NEW YORK, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- New terrorism charges have been filed against two U.S. citizens accused of providing money and computer assistance to al-Qaida, federal officials said Tuesday.

Wesam el-Hanafi, 33, and Sabirhan Hasanoff, 34, are to be arraigned on the superseding indictment Thursday in U.S. District Court in New York, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Besides the charges of providing material support to al-Qaida, the pair are accused of violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

El-Hanafi, who was born in New York, allegedly traveled to Yemen in February 2008 to meet with two al-Qaida members, who gave him assignments to perform.

Hasanoff, who is a dual citizen of the United States and Australia who lives in New York, is accused of performing assignments for the terrorist group in New York.
