Duffy wins GOP nod for Wis. House seat

MADISON, Wis., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Former "Real World" TV personality Sean Duffy won the Republican primary Tuesday for the U.S. House seat being vacated by David Obey, results showed.

Duffy, now a county prosecutor, got 67 percent of the vote in the GOP contest and will face state Sen. Julie Lassa, who handily won the Democratic primary with 84 percent, The Hill reported.

Duffy's venture into the political big time has been heady. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, campaigned for him in recent weeks and he has been targeted by a campaign ad run by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The decision by Obey, a Democrat, to retire set up the wide-open race in the 7th District.

In Wisconsin's Republican primary for U.S. Senate, one businessman, Ron Johnson, easily defeated another, Dave Westlake, the Wisconsin State Journal said. Johnson forged out to about an 80 percent to 20 percent margin against Westlake with about 6 percent of the precincts reporting.

Johnson will take on Democratic incumbent Russ Feingold, who is going after a fourth six-year term.

In the race for governor, where Jim Doyle decided against seeking a third term, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker was leading former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann in the GOP primary, 54 percent to 43 percent with 8 percent of the precincts reporting, the State Journal said.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, a former congressman, was declared an easy winner over Tim John, a Milwaukee businessman making his first foray into politics, the newspaper said. Barrett had 90 percent of the vote, early returns showed.
