TRENTON, N.J., Sept. 11 (UPI) -- A doctor who owns six abortion clinics in New Jersey has agreed to stop practicing in the state while authorities investigate his practice, his lawyer said.
Dr. Steven Chase Brigham, who is permitted to perform abortions only up to 14 weeks at his American Women's Services clinic in Voorhees, allegedly operated on a woman who was 21 weeks pregnant, The Star-Ledger of Newark reports.
The state Attorney General's Office says he began the procedure at the clinic in New Jersey and told the 18-year-old to go to another clinic in Elkton, Md., the next day to finish it. The woman ended up having emergency surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after her uterus was perforated, the report said.
Florida and New York have pulled Brigham's medical license and he has voluntarily surrendered it in Pennsylvania, while Maryland warned him not to practice there without a license, his lawyer, Richard Westling, said. The lawyer said Brigham's effort to give women "safe, private, affordable and legal abortion services" has led to multiple investigations, the report said.
