Man dies in Koran-burning protest at base

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- At least one man was killed Friday when troops fired on a crowd at a NATO base in Afghanistan protesting a proposed Koran-burning in Florida, an official said.

Amin Sohail said about 10,000 people gathered at the base in Faizabad, emerging from mosques after prayers on Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, The Guardian reported. The base houses German forces in Badakhshan province.

There were also demonstrations in Kabul and other Afghan cities.

The Dove Outreach Center, a small congregation in Gainesville, Fla., announced plans to burn the books Saturday, the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

Pastor Terry Jones called off the burning Thursday, saying he'd been assured a proposed Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero in New York wouldn't be built. But he later said he was lied to and was rethinking the book-burning plan.

Burning the holy book wouldn't harm it as an ideal but would be an insult to the world's 1.5 billion Muslims, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said in a statement marking the end of Ramadan, the BBC reported.
