MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- A water-cooling tower was the source of a Legionnaires' disease outbreak at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan, a military spokesman said.
"The important thing is that they found out what the source is and the fact that everyone is all right," 1st Lt. Anthony J. Lesterson, 127th Wing public affairs officer, said in a report Friday in The Detroit News.
The disease sickened seven civilian employees in two buildings in July, the report said.
The cooling tower, and the adjacent buildings where the employees worked, have been cleaned and sanitized by a company that specializes in Legionnaires' mitigation, the newspaper said.
Legionnaires' disease is a type of lung infection with initial symptoms similar to the flu.
The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Legionnaires' disease affects as many as 18,000 people a year.
