WASHINGTON, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- The Office of Congressional Ethics recommends further investigation of three U.S. House members but one of the three says there is "no evidence" of wrongdoing.
The office concluded there was sufficient evidence of wrongdoing to warrant further investigation into Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., Rep. Joseph Crowley, D-N.Y., and Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., The New York Times reported Tuesday. Investigators said all three held questionable fundraising events in 2009 days before voting on financial reform legislation.
Price issued a statement saying it was "truly a mystery" how the investigators came to recommend further investigation, the newspaper said.
"There being no evidence of any wrongdoing or any inconsistency in my policy position, one can only guess as to the motive behind their decision or even why they chose to initiate a review in the first place," Price said.
Crowley's office issued statement Tuesday saying he "has always complied with the letter and spirit of all rules regarding fundraising and standards of conduct."
The ethics office recommended dropping investigations into five other members of the House who also held fundraisers shortly before the December 2009 vote, three Republicans and two Democrats, the Times said.
