HIDALGO, Mexico, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- The mayor of a town in Mexico was killed and his daughter injured when gunmen attacked a truck he was driving, authorities say.
Marco Antonio Leal Garcia, mayor of Hidalgo, in the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas, died in the attack, and his 10-year-old daughter was hurt, CNN said Monday. The girl's injuries were not life-threatening.
"It was not just attack against a person. It was an attack against institutions," Tamaulipas Gov. Eugenio Hernandez Flores said in a statement Sunday evening.
The attack remains under investigation and authorities said they don't know who carried it out. However, Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, has been the scene of numerous recent killings, the report said.
Tuesday, investigators found the bodies of 72 migrants there.
"This cowardly crime and reprehensible violent acts which occurred recently in this state reinforce our commitment to use all the resources of the Mexican state to continue fighting criminal gangs seeking to intimidate the families (in) Tamaulipas," Mexican President Felipe Calderon said in a statement.
More than 28,000 people have died in drug violence since December 2006, the report said.
