DETROIT, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A Michigan poll indicates a majority of voters in the state support the Tea Party movement and strict immigration laws.
The EPIC/MRA poll published in the Detroit Free Press Saturday said three-quarters of the 600 voters surveyed liked the idea of a tough immigration law such as Arizona's controversial SB 1070.
State Rep. Dave Agema, R-Grandville, told the newspaper that illegal immigrants are being paid lower wages by unscrupulous contractors and were straining public services. Agema has sponsored legislation similar to SB 1070, which he said had been bottled up by Michigan's Democratic leaders.
Another 44 percent of Michigan voters said they favored the Tea Party philosophy of reducing the reach of the federal government while 22 percent said they opposed the conservative movement. In the Detroit area, 37 percent backed the movement while 39 percent disapproved.
The poll had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
