New York bomb plot trial to begin

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Trial begins this week for three Americans and one Haitian accused of trying to bomb New York synagogues and fire surface-to-air missiles at U.S. planes.

Prosecutors charge U.S. citizens James Cromitie, David Williams and Onta Williams and Haitian Laguerre Payen of being "eager to bring death to Jews," CNN reported Monday.

The FBI allegedly uncovered the homegrown plot after a yearlong investigation involving an informant who initially met with Cromitie in June 2008 in Newburgh, N.Y.

CNN reported at that meeting Cromitie said he was angry about U.S. involvement in Afghanistan where his parents lived and was interested in "doing something to America."

The informant joined the four men at a home equipped with concealed video and audio equipment where they allegedly began plotting to bomb synagogues, authorities said.

After the men conducted surveillance of an Air National Guard base where they allegedly wanted to blow up planes, the informant provided them with a dud surface-to-air guided missile and C-4 plastic explosives, CNN said.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said after the men planted the devices in two cars, waiting officers descended upon them making the arrests in May 2009.
