Lawyer: Misty hid while Haleigh was taken

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A young Florida woman suspected in the 2009 disappearance of Haleigh Cummings has pleaded no contest to unrelated drug charges.

Misty Croslin, 18, entered no contest pleas Monday in Putnam County and Tuesday in St. Johns to charges of selling oxycodone, the Florida Times-Union reported. She faces a long prison sentence.

Most of her immediate family and her estranged husband, Ronald Cummings, face similar charges. Cummings has a court date Friday, and his lawyer says a plea deal is in the works.

Croslin and Cummings married after 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings disappeared in February 2009.

Croslin's lawyer told reporters after a hearing Tuesday in St. Johns County that the teenager has told a consistent story about the night Haleigh vanished.

Croslin has said she hid with Ronald Cummings Jr., Haleigh's 3-year-old brother, when her cousin, Joe Overstreet, came to their trailer in Satsuma looking for a gun belonging to the boy's father.

The teenager said she heard Haleigh screaming and that she got a quick look while Overstreet put Haleigh in a bag or covered her with black material.

"She tells so many stories," said Teresa Neves, Haleigh's paternal grandmother. "You don't get to pick and choose what is true."

About 50 relatives and supporters gathered Tuesday at the Memorial Bridge in Palatka for a balloon launch marking Haleigh's 7th birthday.
