CONCORD, N.H., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A New Hampshire legislator resigned Thursday and apologized for "thoughtless remarks" he made online when he speculated about Sarah Palin's death.
State Rep. Timothy Horrigan posted the remark on Facebook Wednesday, reacting to an earlier remark by a Democratic candidate for the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Keith David Halloran had posted a message online saying he wished Palin, the former Alaska governor, and her daughter's former boyfriend Levi Johnston, had been on board the plane that crashed Monday, killing former Sen. Teds Stevens, R-Alaska.
"Well a dead Palin wd be even more dangerous than a live one...she is all about her myth & if she was dead she cldn't commit any more gaffes," Horrigan wrote.
He notified House Speaker Terie Norelli in a letter Thursday he would resign from the body, The Washington Post reported.
A spokesman for the Republican Party of New Hampshire, Ryan Williams, accused Democrats in the state of having "a widespread fixation" with Palin's death, the newspaper said.
In Washington state, Dino Rossi, a candidate for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, was at a business roundtable with Spokane Republicans last week when one a business owner said incumbent Democratic Sen. Patty Murray should be shot, The Seattle Times reported.
"She ought to be shot," the businesswoman said. "Murray and (Sen. Maria) Cantwell ought to be shot."
Rossi noted there was a reporter in the room and admonished the woman, "That's not really what you meant," the newspaper said.
"I didn't mean that," the woman replied.
Rossi is running against former NFL star Clint Didier, a Tea Party favorite.
