WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- A U.S. Army officer who refused to go to Afghanistan because he believes Barack Obama is ineligible to be president was arraigned Friday.
Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin faced charges of disobeying a lawful order and dereliction of duty, CNN reported.
Lakin, an Army doctor and 18-year veteran, says the order was illegal because President Obama -- his commander in chief -- has not proved he is a natural-born citizen, a requirement for being president.
Lakin and other so-called "birthers" say they want the president to produce his birth certificate.
They argue Obama was not born in Hawaii or that, if he was, living overseas as a child invalidated his citizenship.
The Republican governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle, says Obama's birth certificate is legitimate.
"It's been established he was born here," the governor said. "I can understand why people want to make certain (of) the constitutional requirement of being a natural-born American citizen ... but the question has been asked and answered. And I think just we should all move on now."
Lakin remains adamant in his defense.
"I am not guilty of these charges, and will plead 'not guilty' to them because of my conviction that our commander in chief may be ineligible under the United States Constitution to serve in that highest of all offices," he said.
