'Barefoot bandit' appears in U.S. court

MIAMI, July 14 (UPI) -- Colton Harris-Moore, dubbed the "Barefoot Bandit," set foot in a U.S. court Wednesday, appearing briefly before a judge in Miami.

The judge set another hearing for Friday to give Harris-Moore time to hire a lawyer, KCPQ-TV, Seattle, reported.

In his home state of Washington, his mother, Pam Kohler, said she asked Seattle defense attorney John Henry Browne to represent her son in a criminal case if her son agrees to the representation.

In Miami, Harris-Moore, 19, told the judge he "spoke with my mom and she said she had" an attorney. He also revealed he spoke to his mother a week before his arrest Sunday in the Bahamas.

The teen won't be moved from Miami until a lawyer of record is present, the Seattle TV station said.

He is charged with multiple crimes, including a skein of robberies -- allegedly committed without wearing shoes -- and plane thefts across the United States, beginning in Washington state.

Harris-Moore's two years on the lam ended Sunday when he was arrested in the Bahamas.

Harris-Moore was in a Bahamian court Tuesday and sentenced to three months in prison or a $300 fine. Later, wearing a bullet-proof vest, he was escorted to a plane that flew him to the United States.

He was led away a short time later and by the afternoon was on a plane to the United States.
