BETHALTO, Ill., July 13 (UPI) -- An Illinois man was charged with endangering the life of a child after his 7-year-old son got hold of the father's gun and fired it into a mattress.
Edward P. Crain, 30, of Bethalto, was arrested Sunday at his home, where police confiscated the 9mm pistol and another handgun as evidence, the Belleville News-Democrat reported.
The child took the gun from Crain's nightstand while Crain was sleeping in another room. The boy took the gun to his own bedroom where he fired it, Sheriff's Lt. Gary Burns said.
No one was injured, and Crain took the handgun back from the child and secured it, the News-Democrat reported.
The boy's mother in Granite City called Madison County sheriff's detectives to report that her son got the gun during a weekend visitation with his father, police said.
