U.S. agent fires at van coming from Canada

BLAINE, Wash., July 10 (UPI) -- A U.S. Customs agent shot at a driver who refused to leave his van and drove through a barricade at a Canadian border crossing into Washington, police say.

The driver successfully got into the United States at the Peace Arch crossing Friday but was detained about an hour later, The Province reported. Officials did not release his name or nationality but said he was expected to face criminal charges.

Mike Milne, a spokesman for U.S. Customs, said the agent fired in an attempt to stop the van.

"Anytime you have somebody that is fleeing in a vehicle, you have a few thousand pounds of metal and steel that is moving at a high rate of speed, it creates a very dangerous situation," he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. "The fortunate thing about this one is that there was no one hurt."

The Peace Arch crossing is 20 miles south of Vancouver on the border between British Columbia and Washington.
