Jailed consultant wants to visit his mom

DETROIT, July 6 (UPI) -- A Michigan political consultant awaiting sentencing for bribery and extortion wants permission to visit his elderly mother on her deathbed, his attorney says.

Richard Convertino filed court papers Monday seeking a temporary release from jail for Sam Riddle, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.

Riddle is serving time in the St. Clair County Jail for felonious assault of his live-in companion, former state Rep. Mary Waters.

His mother, Essie Riddle, 87, is in the intensive care unit of a Flint hospital after suffering a heart attack and complications, Convertino says.

In his federal court filing, Convertino says because of her medical condition, it is unknown if Ms. Riddle will ever recover and his client would like a chance to visit his mother "while she is still alive."

Riddle, 61, pleaded guilty May 20 to conspiracy to commit bribery and extortion.

His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 17 in U.S. District Court.
