Uncle Sam seeking data from Canada

MONTREAL, June 29 (UPI) -- A member of Canada's Liberal Party says the government has introduced legislation giving the United States jurisdiction over Canadian airline passengers.

Bill C-42 amends Canada's Aeronautics Act to allow airlines to communicate passenger information to "a foreign state" for aircraft that fly over that country without landing, The (Montreal) Gazette reported Tuesday.

The measure presented by the Canadian government would give U.S. officials final say over who may board an aircraft in Canada if it will be traveling in U.S. airspace.

Liberal Party transport critic Joe Volpe said the measure doesn't specifically refer to the United States but it is intended to comply with the Secure Flight program of U.S. Homeland Security.

"Canadian sovereignty has gone right out the window," Volpe said. "You are going to be subject to American law."

Volpe said the bill was introduced with no warning to opposition parties or the public right before parliament adjourned.
