Lockdown lifted at U.S. naval base in N.J.

LAKEHURST, N.J., June 21 (UPI) -- Officials ordered a lockdown Monday at a U.S. Navy base in Lakehurst, N.J., after a report of gunfire at one of the base's gates, military authorities said.

Base personnel looking into the report of gunshots discovered a civilian delivery driver at another gate was armed, the Asbury Park (N.J.) Press reported. Investigators were unable to confirm whether any shots had been fired, the newspaper said.

The armed truck driver was arrested at the main gate and charged with violating federal security rules even though the gun was licensed, the Press reported. It is illegal to bring weapons from the outside onto military bases, the report said.

The 87th Security Forces Squadron responded to what officials called "simultaneous incidents" about 9:30 a.m. EDT Monday, resulting in the lockdown of the Lakehurst section of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst base that lasted about 1 hour, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger said.

Military officials said the incident began when a security guard reported hearing what sounded like gunshots near a gate that is heavily used by delivery vehicles.

The Naval Air Engineering Center is probably best known as the site of the 1937 crash of the airship Hindenberg.
