CHICAGO, June 16 (UPI) -- A Chicago Public Schools employee honored for donating a kidney to an acquaintance may be fired for violating the city's residency requirement.
Dan Coyne got a letter last week from the Chicago Board of Education telling him he must move from Evanston if he wants to keep his job, the Chicago Tribune reported. Coyne, a tenured social worker, is to be the guest of honor Thursday at a lunch celebrating his gift to Myra de la Vega, a single mother who works at the grocery store where he does most of his shopping.
"So which is it? Am I a poor employee or a great one? I guess it depends on whom you ask," Coyne said.
Monique Bond, a spokeswoman for the school system, said the termination notice is no reflection of the value of Coyne's work. She said the computer just caught up with him.
"He's a hero in the eyes of many Chicagoans, but unfortunately the database system is blind to that," Bond said.
Coyne said he plans to keep his job, even if he has to rent a room in Chicago while his wife and two children remain in Evanston.
