Third-grader brings loaded gun to school

DETROIT, June 2 (UPI) -- A third-grade boy was suspended after bringing a loaded semiautomatic handgun to his school in suburban Detroit, officials said.

"It's too soon to tell" if he'll be allowed to return in the fall to Eastover Elementary School in Bloomfield Township, school Superintendent Steven Gaynor told the Detroit Free Press in a story published Wednesday.

The boy showed the gun and a bullet to another student during recess on the playground, Gaynor said in an e-mail to parents and staff. The student immediately told his teacher the boy had a gun.

The boy made no threats with the gun and had no history of disciplinary issues at the school.

"Remind your children that guns are dangerous" and "urge your child to immediately talk to an adult" if they see a weapon, in or out of school, Gaynor said in his e-mail.

Bloomfield Township has several programs in its school system and fire department that warn students to alert adults if they see a peer with a gun, officials said.
