Sen. Lugar's wife guilty in DUI case

WASHINGTON, June 2 (UPI) -- Charlene Lugar, wife of U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., avoided jail time when she pleaded guilty to drunken driving, court records show.

The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday she was given a 30-day suspended jail term, fined $250 and slapped with driving restrictions for a year after pleading guilty Friday in Fairfax County, Va. Prosecutors dropped a charge of hitting a parked car and leaving the scene, the newspaper said.

The Star said Lugar can drive for limited purposes for a year, including to attend a mandated alcohol education program and recovery group meetings in Falls Church, Va.

The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, Ind., reported after Charlene Lugar, 77, was arrested last November, a breath test administered at a jail 3 hours later showed she had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent, above the 0.08 percent legal limit but below the 0.15 percent level that would have required a mandatory jail sentence.

A police officer had stopped her car at an intersection near the Lugars' home in McLean, Va., after noticing damage to the vehicle's front end.
