86-year-old woman hit by stray bullet

PHILADELPHIA, June 2 (UPI) -- An 86-year-old Philadelphia woman struck by a stray bullet in front of her home was "extremely lucky" her injuries weren't worse, police say.

Thelma Causey stepped outside her home in the Kingsessing neighborhood Monday night for some fresh air and saw someone running across the street, then heard a gunshot, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

"I heard, 'Pow!' and I felt this sting," Causey said. "Then I felt all this stuff running down my leg, which was blood."

She went back into the home she shares with her daughter, who came running down the stairs.

"I think I've been shot," Causey said.

Investigators were trying to piece together information about the shooting, the Inquirer said.

Witnesses described one young man being chased by another, possibly the gunman, city police Lt. John Walker said.

Three shell casings were found at the scene.

A ricocheting fragment probably hit Causey, Walker said, and she was "extremely lucky" not to have been more badly injured.

Causey was treated and released at a local hospital and returned home to survey a large bloodstain on her living room carpet.

"I don't think that's coming out," she said.
