PHOENIX, May 24 (UPI) -- Arizona Gov. Janice Brewer has asked the White House for helicopters and unmanned aerial drones to patrol the state's border with Mexico, officials say.
In a letter to President Barack Obama, Brewer asked for OH-58 Kiowa helicopters, pointing out Arizona has only four "available for border missions," CNNMoney.com reported Monday.
"These helicopters are extremely valuable assets in supporting law enforcement efforts on the ground," she wrote. "The number available, though, is inadequate to provide the kind of support needed on the Arizona border."
Brewer also asked for unmanned aerial vehicles, remote-controlled robot drones used in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"I am aware of how effective these assets have become in Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, and it seems UAV operations would be ideal for border security and counter-drug missions," Brewer said.
The governor's letter, dated May 20, coincided with a state dinner held at the White House for Mexican President Felipe Calderon, who has condemned Arizona's new immigration law, CNNMoney.com said.
